A high school in Dundee, approximately 200 miles away from Newcastle, was able to purchase tickets for the highly anticipated Champions League home game against Barcelona on Thursday night. The school had been approached by a ticket provider and purchased the tickets in good faith.
However, the tickets have since been cancelled by the club, and the seats have been put up for sale to supporters who had entered the official ballot for upcoming fixtures.
The club took immediate action upon discovering the issue, stating that they have not received any funds above the face value price of the season tickets. The club has also returned the seats for sale to legitimate supporters.
In a statement, the club apologized for the oversight and emphasized their commitment to protecting legitimate access for Newcastle United fans.
Lisa Mole, chair of the Newcastle United Supporters' Trust (NUST), expressed gratitude that the club had taken action to address the issue. However, she also noted that the situation was disappointing and highlighted the ongoing issue of third-party ticket resales pricing out passionate supporters.
According to Mole, approximately 103 seats are being resold to outside parties for every home game, which is a significant concern for the fanbase.
The club has assured fans that they will continue to take steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
